Sodium Silicate
Also known as water glass, is a versatile inorganic compound with a variety of industrial applications. It is a colorless, transparent, and viscous liquid that is soluble in water. In steel production and foundry processes, sodium silicate is commonly used as a binder for sand molds and cores. When mixed with sand, it forms a hard, durable mold that can withstand high temperatures and pressures during the casting process. This helps to create precise and complex shapes in metal casting. Additionally, sodium silicate is used as a flux in steel production to remove impurities from the molten metal and improve the quality of the final product. It also acts as a protective coating to prevent oxidation and improve the surface finish of steel products. Overall, sodium silicate plays a crucial role in steel production and foundry operations by providing strength and stability to molds, enhancing the quality of castings, and improving the efficiency of manufacturing processes.
